Okay, I'm not trying to copy [info]annarama :P , this is just something I've been thinking about. It's actually highly unlikely that we really will buy another game console, definitely not any time soon anyway, but still. I've been thinking about it.

Note that for purposes of this poll we are pretending that price is not a factor. Also, online gaming is not important to me (but I'm open to advocacy on that point).

Feel free to elaborate in comments. Oh, and I didn't include the Wii since we already have one of those (as well as a PS2).

Now I think I need to go play a video game to shake off some lingering annoyance from work today. I had a conversation with a very negative customer, and I know that any retail establishment is going to have people criticizing its products, but it bugs me. I just don't understand why this guy wants to waste his time and mine coming into my store and deprecating the chips in our MacBook Pros. I mean, really, what kind of person takes pleasure in going into stores and telling the employees he doesn't intend to buy some item? Does that make him feel superior? Well, I wasn't impressed, especially since I later learned that he was actually wrong.

So now I get to feel superior, heh.

'night, all. See y'all tomorrow!

Okay, so I had quite decided that November 10th would be the much-anticipated MacBook buying day, and then yesterday Apple goes and updates the MacBook Pros to the long-awaited Core 2 Duo chips (instead of just plain Core Duos which they had before and which they still have in the MacBooks). They would never update the MacBooks and the Pros on the same day, so now everyone's expecting the MacBook improvements to follow pretty soon. And I know I don't really need (well, don't at all need) maximum power, and the simple Core Duo should be more than sufficient for me, but nonetheless it would still annoy me if I bought the MacBook and then the next week it got updated (sure, 14-day return policy, but 10% restocking fee, so not that attractive a prospect). It's quite a pickle, isn't it?

That means it's time for a poll:

buy on Nov. 10th as whether it's updated or not—you don't need the new chip, and if you always waited for something better, you'd never get anything
1 (7.7%)

wait just until Nov. 21st—if Apple doesn't update before the Thanksgiving shopping weekend, they won't do it at all this year
8 (61.5%)

wait as long as it takes—put the $1000 in an interest-bearing account and by the time the Core 2 Duo MacBook comes out, you'll have accrued enough money for a MacBook Pro
4 (30.8%)

Ergh. I've got a cold and I feel kinda crappy today. But I felt absolutely horrible yesterday, so I'm hoping that by tomorrow I'll have progressed to just mildly yucky.

Now, your opinion is requested on something I was told this weekend:

It'll be a few weeks before I get my new laptop, but I like to be prepared so I've been carefully considering all my buying options. I think I've finally decided that when the time comes I'll go to an Apple Store in the suburbs rather than buying online or at the campus computer store, because then I can still get the educational discount, I don't have to pay for shipping, and I'll save on sales tax (7% in Oak Brook as opposed to 9% in the city of Chicago—that's like twenty bucks less!). Instant gratification is a plus as well.

And a report on last Thursday's Doughty show will be coming up shortly. For real this time, I swear, unlike with the Sufjan and Bookeaters shows.

Wow, I sure got snowed on this morning. But now I'm here in this cubicle to do my extra teaching hours and 3 (of 6 scheduled at this writing) students have already missed their appointments, so I'd say the workload is pretty sweet so far. I'm getting paid to write in my journal! I'm living the dream of so many bloggers.

On to the important stuff: a poll. Now that we've had a couple new episodes of Veronica Mars, who's the for now still-MIA character from previous seasons that you're most anxious to see back on the show?

Poop. I've been working on this baby set for some friends and it's coming along well and looking really cute (there will of course be pictures in a few days, when everything's done), but then today I started sewing the side seams (and I hate seaming, but that's not the point at the moment) and when I got down to the bottom I realized that I miscounted the rows of ribbing on the different pieces, so the back piece is two rows longer than the front. ARGH! I hate making stupid mistakes like this. I seamed it together anyway, fudging the stitches, and I'm pretty sure when it's blocked it won't be highly noticeable, but...it still bugs me. Some mistakes I can overlook but I'm not sure this is one of them. I could fix it by unraveling from the bottom and either adding rows to the front or subtracting from the bottom, but then the bind-off row won't match the cast-on; or I could unravel both and bind them off in the same way, and then they won't match the cuffs...

I guess you could say I'm detail-oriented. What do y'all think?

I got new glasses last week and I don't know how I feel about them. I'd been wearing contact lenses for many years before that, and I was thinking I might switch back to glasses full-time, but they're really bugging me—I feel like I have to adjust them every ten seconds. I don't know if that's because they don't fit right, or because my nose is the wrong shape, or whether that's just inherent to glasses-wearing...anyway it's driving me nuts. Glasses do have various advantages over contacts, such as correcting my astigmatism (which my contacts didn't) and not causing eye fungus, but contacts are much more comfortable and don't make me feel like my world is bounded by a black rectangle. I'm going to give the glasses at least a couple more days before I decide...which means there's time for a poll before I make my choice:

Oh, and perhaps I should add that I'm happy with the way the glasses look on me, so vanity is not a factor in the decision.

Duuude, check out this exciting email I got. )

However, in an unrelated situation, I've got a problem: first I was all happy about Mates of State on October 6th, and then later I was all happy about Sleater-Kinney on October 6th, and only recently did I realize that I can't possibly go to both since they're on the same date (duh) and also at the same time (9pm). Now what am I going to do? What would you do?

EDIT: Damn it, I knew I shouldn't have put the "I can't choose" option in the poll. You people are no help at all.
